Hearing Aids Needed for Bolivian Children

I have looked into the faces of so many children and their families in these past weeks... hearing of the parents' frustrations and their hopes... I wish I could communicate all of the emotions that I feel as I talk with these families."

-Diane Bellomy, Director of Amigos del Hogar

Here's the story....

The Amigos del Hogar Volunteer Group has been working to help disadvantaged indigenous children in Bolivia since 1992. We began by providing volunteers and support to a home for abused and abandoned children. Recently we expanded our program to provide support to a home/school for hearing impaired children. We came to realize that many children with hearing loss from low-income families don't attend school, don't have access to basic medical treatment or professionals to help them with their disability, and don't own hearing aids. Consequently, these children have very few opportunities in life.

Together with international volunteers and Bolivian professionals dedicated to helping the disabled, Amigos del Hogar initiated the first campaign to find children with hearing loss in La Paz, Bolivia and the outlying rural area. Through our hearing campaign, we identified well over a hundred children with hearing disabilities, all of whom have special needs that we
are working to fulfill.

Firstly we hired a school bus to transport these boys and girls to attend
the special school where the teachers are trained to work with children
with hearing disabilities. We also made contacts to acquire hearing aids, and began a program to provide speech therapy to help them to learn to speak
.

Now we need your help in order to continue these programs to make a brighter future possible for these boys and girls. We need funds to continue providing the school bus, speech therapists, hearing aids, audio-visual teaching aids and so much more….

All of your donations will go directly into the Hearing Project - all of our work is on a volunteer basis. If you can afford even a small amount, it will make an significant difference in the lives of Bolivian children with hearing loss. Thank you for your support!
